Alfred Guymond, 75, of Swanzey, NH and Nokomis, Florida, died November 25, 2014 in the comfort of his home from Cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile ducts. His wife, Claudette, was by his side.
He was born in Keene, NH on September 26, 1939 the son of Alfred and Hazel (Wright) Guymond.
He grew up and attended schools in Swanzey and Keene and was a1957 graduate of Keene High School. He later received an associate’s degree in accounting from Concord Commercial College.
Throughout his ordeal with this disease, Al remained extremely positive through his last days. He understood that his body was the carrier of the disease-not his mind and spirit. It was this drive that kept him alive well past his given prognosis.
Mr. Guymond was a kind, honest, hardworking man. The simple things in life brought him happiness. He was always smiling and whistling merrily. He was a devoted Husband, Father and “Papa” to his grandchildren. He treasured his lasting relationships with childhood friends as well as his regular customers from his many years as a small-business owner. Although known as “frugal” Al would discreetly give away groceries to his most needy customers.
He loved to play Cribbage and card games. His favorite opponent was his cherished granddaughter, Mikayla. They enjoyed their last game of cards together just two days before his passing. Al was an avid collector of baseball hats and T-shirts. He was a voracious New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan. He could tell you anything you wanted to know about American history. He loved his country and was a true American patriot.
A quiet and humble man of faith, Al chose to worship the same way he chose to live his life, privately, with no posturing or grandiosity.
He is survived by his wife Claudette (Campagna) Guymond of Swanzey, NH; a son Grant R. Guymond and his wife Kathy of Aylett, VA and a daughter Michelle Randall and her husband Mark of Keene, NH; five grandchildren; Ryan Truslow, Sean Truslow, Aaron Guymond, Ryan Guymond, and Mikayla Randall; three great grandchildren; Savannah Truslow, Levi Guymond, and Kaiden Guymond.
At Al’s request, services will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Dana Farber Institute, For Cholangiocarcinoma Research, PO box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.
The family of Alfred Guymond will be forever grateful to Home Healthcare Hospice and community services in Keene, as well as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Boston, Massachusetts. The doctor’s, nurses and staff from both of these places were all positive, caring and professional. His dignity was honored until the end.
