
He was born on April 23, 1938 in Dusseldorf, Germany, where his father worked for the International Harvester Company.
After spending the war years in the United States, the family returned to Europe, where Carl pursued a peripatetic education, attending the Ecole Nationale de St. Gilles in Brussels; the prestigious Sigtunastiftelsens Humanistiska Laroverk in Sigtuna, Sweden; and the elite Institut auf dem Rosenberg in St. Gallens, Switzerland. He finished his secondary education at the Westtown Friends School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. After receiving a baccalaureate degree in history from Northwestern University, Carl went on to earn a Ph.D. in European history, with a specialization in the French Revolution, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While working on his doctoral dissertation, he taught European history at Kent State University in Ohio from 1964 to 1967.
Upon receiving his degree, he spent the next 46 years as a professor of history at Keene State College. He retired from Keene State as Professor Emeritus of History in 2013. At Keene State, Carl was a popular and much beloved professor for generations of students.
During his remarkable life, Carl traveled the world, visiting over 80 countries. He spoke several languages with ease, including French, German, Swedish, Italian and Spanish. A devoted patron of the arts, he was a long-standing member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Carl was predeceased by his wife, Marlene A. (Brown) Granquist, on January 21, 2013.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11:00AM in the Mountain View Cemetery, Old Homestead Highway (Route 32), Swanzey, NH. Rev. Damon Anderson will officiate at the service.
