Edmund W. Chabot, Sr, 96, a life-long resident of Keene, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 14, 2013 surrounded by his family and loved ones at his home at Bentley Commons of Keene, following a short period of declining health.
Edmund was born July 4, 1916, in Keene, New Hampshire, the son of Artemise and William Chabot. He was a 1934 graduate of Keene High School and a member of the first graduating class from St. Joseph’s School in Keene. On July 18, 1942 he married the love of his life Rosamond Magee and they were blessed with sixty eight years together.
Our Dad grew up when Keene was a much different place. It was a time before television when a phone operator was required to complete a call and the railroad was an important part of life in Keene. In the winter months with several feet of snow on the ground he would sled down Water Street hill all the way to Beaver Brook without fear of approaching cars. In the hot summer months he would safely bike to distant swimming holes along the Ashuelot River with friends. He had endless stories to share about a time in older Keene.
Dad had a love affair with cars from an early age starting with a Plymouth convertible. Trading his car in for a new one every three years was a vivid memory for us along with weekend rides into the country, parking downtown on Friday nights to see friends and day trips to Hampton Beach.
Dad and his brothers built a tennis court behind their house on Valley Street and they enjoyed playing tennis there with family members and friends. He was an Eagle Scout, a skilled machinist with forty five years of service at Kingsbury’s, woodworking skills to envy and in his later years was a clock maker.
We will remember Dad for his love of life, his kind and supporting presence, all of the backyard games we played together with neighbors, all of his stories that he loved to tell both true and fictional, his great sense of humor that was with him right up to the end, always dancing a jig for the grandchildren and especially for the life lessons he taught us even in his last few weeks. We will miss him dearly and hope he is joined once again with the “love of his life”.
He is survived by three sons: Edmund Chabot, Jr and his wife Gloria of Swanzey, NH, Timothy Chabot and his wife Georgia of Alton Bay, NH, and David Chabot and his wife Lori of Dunstable, MA, his brother William Chabot and his wife Rose of Keene, NH, brother in law Clesson Magee and his wife Virginia of Keene NH, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his wife: Rosamond Chabot, his daughter: Barbara Chabot, two sisters: Dora and Pauline Chabot, and his brother: Francis Chabot.
Services will be private. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bentley Commons, Activity Fund, 197 Water Street, Keene, NH., 03431.
