The Cunningham family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jane B. Cunningham 83, of Keene, New Hampshire after a brief but brave battle with cancer. Jane passed away peacefully at home with her family on February 28, 2026.
Jane was born in Hanover, New Hampshire and spent her younger years in Bath, New Hampshire, where she loved being on her uncle’s farm. Her family then moved to Hanover, New Hampshire, where she met her husband and love of her life, John J. Cunningham III. Jane was married to John for over 49 years before his death in May of 2014.
Jane graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in English and was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.
After college, Jane married and spent time in New York City and then moved to Keene, where she and John raised their three children: John, Amos, and Elizabeth. Jane loved doing anything with her family and friends including sporting events of any kind, walks in the woods, trips to Surry and Spofford Lake, and watching her grandchildren’s concerts and games. Jane was an avid New England sports fan and often finished in the top 5 of her football pool each year.
Jane was a teacher at St. Joseph Regional School in Keene for many years, where she met some of her lifelong and closest friends. Jane loved teaching for many reasons, but mainly for the relationships she was able to make with her students. She continued to keep in touch with many of her students well into their adult lives.
After retirement, Jane did a great deal of volunteer work for America Reads, the United Way, the Keene Public Library, and the Bereavement Team and Outreach Program at the Parish of the Holy Spirit. Retirement also allowed for time with her Gym Buddies, Widows Group, teaching friends, neighbors, and travel with her dear friends from Notre Dame. Most of all, Jane loved being with her family, who she was devoted to in all ways. She was the best Mom, Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt.
Jane is survived by John J. Cunningham IV and his wife, Kim V. Cunningham, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, Amos B. Cunningham of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Elizabeth C. Dowst of Newmarket, New Hampshire; sister JoAnna B. Noyes of Evanston, Illinois; and grandchildren, John G. Cunningham, Karoline C. Hale and husband Carter, John P. Dowst, Michael B. Dowst, Karlie R. Cunningham, Amos A. Cunningham, and Sabrina A. Cunningham.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 6th at 12:00pm in the St. Bernard Church 185 Main Street, Keene.
For those who wish, donations can be made in Mrs. Cunningham’s memory to the Monadnock Conservancy (monadnockconservancy.org), PO Box 337, Keene, NH 03431; or to Catholic Charities of New Hampshire (cc-nh.org), 100 William Leob Drive, Unit 3, Manchester, NH 03109.
