
She was born in Keene on July 20, 1929, the daughter of John Charles Dodds and Mary Robertson Dodds.
She grew up on a farm on Wyman Road where she developed her love of animals. She graduated from Keene High School and attended the University of New Hampshire and the Forsyth Dental School to become a dental hygienist. She worked in schools in New Hampshire and Delaware and later for a dentist in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Martha loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer and an enthusiastic skier. She was Club Champion at the West Chester Golf and Country Club in Pennsylvania. She also won the Presidents Cup at Pine Grove Springs Country Club in Spofford, New Hampshire. She belonged to the Keene Country Club and was a senior member of the National Ski Patrol.
Martha married Allan R. Potter in June, 1952. She lived in Baltimore; Seaford and Wilmington, Delaware; Akron, Ohio; Geneva, Switzerland; Hudson, Ohio; West Chester, Pennsylvania; Singapore; Pinehurst, North Carolina; and Keene, New Hampshire. Despite the many moves she spent every summer at her cottage on Spofford Lake. She loved her cottage which was built by her grandfather, George B. Robertson, and enjoyed spending time there with her family and friends. She was a gracious host and a wonderful mother.
Martha had many interests. She was a member of the Cheshire County Historical Society, the Chesterfield Historical Association, the Ladies Charitable Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She belonged to two bridge clubs and a book club. She researched and wrote a book, "Spofford Lake, A Retrospective of her Cottages, Camps, and Resorts" which was published in 2008.
Martha is survived by her husband: Allan R. Potter of Keene, NH; four children: Nancy Thompson and her husband Rod of Keene, NH, Susan McGowan and her husband Tom of Litchfield, CT, Stephen Potter and his wife Charlotte of West Chester, PA; and Bruce Potter and his wife Donna of Spofford, NH; one grandson: Colin McGowan of New York City, NY; one sister, Betsy Dodds Lane of Keene, NH; and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her sister, Mary Dodds Sakoian.
There will be no calling hours and burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Square, Keene, NH on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 11:00 am.
