He was born on June 1st, 1935 the son of Julian Pragoff Brown and Elizabeth Craighead Watson Brown in Fredericksburg, Virginia. As the son of a career military officer in the United States Marine Corps, Winthrop dwelled in many locations throughout the US. He spent childhood summers at Laurel Lake attending camp at South Pond Cabins and later graduated from Dublin School where he formed a life-long relationship with the founders Paul and Nancy Lehman.
Winthrop earned a history degree, a subject he pursued passionately throughout his life, from the University of Virginia. During that period he enlisted in the Marine Corps reserves, a term of service in which he felt great pride.
Following his graduation from UVA, he briefly worked on a cruise liner before beginning his extensive career as a stockbroker. After a decade of working on Wall Street, he returned to the Monadnock Region in 1977 where he worked as an associate with Tucker Anthony in Peterborough. He then went on to open an office for Moseley Hallgarten, bringing the first full-service brokerage firm to Keene. He retired after a career of more than fifty years, during which he worked as a respected and trusted financial advisor to many families and individuals in the region.
Winthrop’s fervor for all things outdoors led him to a lifetime of skiing, fishing, hiking, and swimming. For a decade he and his family took yearly trips to St. John, and they hosted children from the Fresh Air Fund for six consecutive years. He also played an active role in the community with his involvement as an officer in the Lions Club, a member of the Fitzwilliam Budget Committee, and leading member of the Laurel Lake Swim Club where he remains the current president.
No other aspect of Winthrop’s life occupied a greater portion of his heart than did his children. All four of them exude the wisdom, compassion, and sensibilities that he imparted upon them.
He is survived by his beloved wife Maureen O’Brien, his daughter Nichole Brown Douglas and her husband Milton of Bellevue, WA; his son Julian Pragoff Brown II and his wife Julie of Bellevue, WA; his daughter Molly O’Brien Brown and her husband Theodore Pickett of New Orleans, LA; his son Christopher Martin Brown of Fitzwilliam, NH; his three grandchildren William Douglas, and Jessie and Sydney Brown of Bellevue, WA; and his sister Elizabeth Gray of Dedham, MA.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 7th at 11:00 AM in the Fitzwilliam Community Church, General James Reed Highway (Route 119), Fitzwilliam, NH. Rev. Lynda Tolton, Pastor, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hospice at Home Healthcare Hospice and Community Services, PO Box 564, Keene, NH 03431, or to the Cancer Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, 55 Fruit Street, Boston, MA 02114.
