Michael Edward Pickett, fondly known as Mikey P, was born to William Pickett and Josephine Gater Pickett on May 18, 1946, in Des Moines IA. He graduated from Des Moines Tech High School, and served his country in the US Army as an E4 Machinist Technician Specialist. Mike later earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Iowa.
After college, Mike made his home in Iowa City, where he honed his skills as a carpenter, serving as the President of the Carpenters Union Local 1260. He later became a self-employed carpentry and drywall professional, taking immense pride in each project, and always striving for perfection in every detail of his work. Mike always found time to share his knowledge and love of carpentry with those around him and would often execute projects for his family members. Beyond his carpentry skills, Mike was cherished for his sense of humor, charisma, and his intelligence.
Mike loved cars, especially his 1967 blue GTO, and always marveled over how much horsepower a car had. He also loved family celebrations and regularly traveled home from Iowa City to never miss a holiday, birthday party or family get-together.
Toward the end of his life, he moved to Denver CO, then Haslet TX to be near his siblings.
On December 30, 2024, Mike was called home and departed this life. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Josephine Pickett, brother Norman Pickett, and great grandson, Aiden Smith.
Left to cherish his memory are brothers, Rick (Connie) Pickett of Richardson TX, Kirby Pickett of Houston TX, and sister, Jan Dorsey of Haslet TX; children Mike Pickett, Jr. and Simone (Michael) Pickett-Wilson of Atlanta GA, Shawn Pickett of Des Moines IA, Aisha (Lori) Pickett-Ellis of Chicago IL; honorary children, Tyson Marshek of Raleigh NC and Ayla Marshek of Iowa City IA.
