Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Rae Jean O’Neal, and Celia McAlpin O’Neal, and his sons, Timothy and Shawn O’Neal. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jan Laurett Coffman O’Neal; daughters Cynthia Anzaldua and husband Jerry and Mary Guerra and husband David; seven cherished grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his siblings, Carl O’Neal of Pampa, Texas, and Diane Johnson of Valley View, Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews who adored him.
Sam proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1958 and remained active in the American Legion throughout his life. After his military service, he built a successful career with Hunt Petroleum in Texas and Mississippi. His heart for giving extended beyond his work—Sam volunteered tirelessly at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Houston and at the Christian Community Storehouse in Keller, Texas. Family was the center of Sam’s world. He delighted in short conversations with his grandchildren—so much so that they once held a contest to see who could keep “Pa” talking the longest! Sam was always game for a good laugh and loved staying connected with those he held dear. His favorite pastimes included visiting with fellow veterans, especially USMC veterans, watching bull riding videos, enjoying classic Western movies, and working around the house and yard.
