It is with great sadness that the family of Angela Winefride Linge announce her passing on Thursday, November 18 at 83 years of age. Angela will be deeply missed but never forgotten by her family and friends.
She was born on April 17, 1938 in Leeds, England, to Dr. John Bower and Winefride Bower (nee Bonney). Angela was the second of four girls and lived through the Second World War in England. She and her family left England when Angela was 10, and sailed across the ocean to Canada, eventually settling in Lethbridge, AB. Angela left home to obtain her English Degree at UBC in Vancouver where she met her husband, Fredrick Russell Linge. They were married in 1962 and settled in Kelowna where they would raise their three children, David, Rachel and Winefride. Angela worked as a social worker for the BC government for many years, and then as parish secretary for St. Theresa’s Parish. Angela worked until her early 70s and always prided herself on her work and her relationship with her colleagues. She was a marvel of intellect and had a great passion for writing, reading (especially Jane Austen), the arts and a love for gadgets of all kinds. She won various writing contests, completed a children’s novel and left us with some beautiful paintings. Angela had a remarkable ability to remember poetry and prose verbatim and had a masterful understanding of literature and Latin etymology.
Angela was a true angel, an inspiration, and her kindness, warmth and ability to listen endeared her to everyone she met. She was actively involved in the community throughout her life. Angela and Fred’s article, “What Does It Feel Like to be Brain Damaged”, was an acclaimed piece that saw them speaking to, and inspiring, countless brain damaged individuals and their families across the world.
Angela is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Fredrick, her sister, Adrienne Murphy, and her adoptive brother, Bill Cavalier. She is survived by her sisters Rosemary Bower and Lorraine Toleikis (Steven); her son David, daughter Rachel, and daughter Winnie; grandchildren James Tomelin, Bonnie Linge, Rebecca McAnerin, Dave Linge, Liam O’Brien and Erin O’Brien; great grandchildren Isolde and Lincoln Tomelin; nephews Angelo, Brian, Desmond, Tony and Sean Murphy, nieces Miranda Burgess and Hilary Toleikis, Roisin Spitzig, Moira Tannenbaum, Valerie Fredrickson and Victoria Hughes; as well as various extended and honourary families members.
On Fred’s side, she was predeceased by Fred’s parents, his eldest brother Hugh (Mary), and his brother Raymond (Colleen), and is survived by his brother Patrick Linge, his sister-in-law Patsy Linge; nephew Terry Linge; and nieces Melody Linge, Debbie Wehnes, Janice Linge, and Kathy Linge.
