

Hauk, Barbara - It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Barbara Monica Hauk. Barbara slipped soundly into peacefulness on Saturday, February 5th, 2011 surrounded by her six children and six of her beloved grandchildren. Barbara was born July 1, 1917 to Benjamin and Elizabeth (Schaeffer) Deck on the family farm in Denzil, Saskatchewan the eighth of sixteen children. She attended school until age 14 when she was needed to help at home. She enjoyed a brief career working at the Mildred Hotel, where she honed her many housekeeping skills. In 1940 she married Pius Hauk. In 1948 they moved to Rutland, BC. During their marriage of 35 years they raised six children. Barbara’s days were spent making lye soap, sewing, braiding rags into rugs, making quilts, crocheting, embroidering, baking bread, making noodles, gardening, canning and raising chickens and pigs. She also worked away from home picking beans, sorting or packing fruit at the packing house or, alongside her husband, hammering, insulating and painting the new houses he was building. Barbara lived life with a positive outlook and an amazing inner strength. Her infamous sewing and quilting skills will be remembered by anyone who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband Pius in 1975. Having outlived all of her 15 siblings, Barbara is survived by her children: Agnes (Delmer) Rieder, Denis (Judy) Hauk, Celine (Ronald) Schaad, Doreen (Don) Roper, Loretta (Gordon) Wittur, and Bernice Kenney, her cherished 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law (Eva Deck, Anne Deck, Margaret Deck, Regina Hauk), brother-in-law (Frank and Dorothy Hauk), numerous nieces and nephews and special friends Pauline, Freida, Betty and Katie. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Fernbrae Manor and staff on 4B at Kelowna General Hospital, for their outstanding compassion. Prayer service will be held on Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. in the chapel of Valleyview Funeral Home, 165 Valleyview Road Kelowna. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 750 N. Rutland Road, Kelowna, BC. with Father Otto Rollheiser O.M.I. officiating.
