

VIRGINIA HARDEN BETH BIG SORREL HORSE/BLACK PLUME (Poik atsinaaki) was born January 09, 1938 on the Blood Indian Reserve to her late parents Bob and Violet (Creighton) Big Sorrel Horse. She passed away at the Kelowna General Hospital, Kelowna, BC on Wednesday May 24, 2012 at the age of 74 years. Virginia is survived by her husband Fred Nasecapow of 40 years and sister Mary Rose Many Chief; daughters Gloria Big Sorrel Horse (Randy), Ramona Black Plume, Noreen Black Plume, Trina Black Plume and sons Alden Black Plume, Alfred Black Plume; 25 grandchildren and numerous great, great, great grandchildren; nephews and nieces ; many relatives thru out Indian Country. Virginia was predeceased by her children Larry, Mike and Joshua and Valerie; grandchildren Ian, Mariah, Tama, Ricky Jr. and Darcy; brothers Robert, Oliver, Percy and Kenyon; sisters Lily, Maureena and Florence; grandparents Percy and Jessie Creighton and Mr. and Mrs. William Big Sorrell Horse. Virginia attended school at St. Paul’s Residential School on the Blood Reserve. She worked and lived thru out Alberta, BC and the US and finally settled in Kelowna, BC for the last 22 years. Virginia volunteered for many years at the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society which lead her to be known as a spiritual elder; resource person and granny. She was also a spiritual elder for the Aboriginal Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Kelowna Metis Society.
Virginia was very assertive in her expression of her values, culture, beliefs and spirituality. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virginia will be deeply missed by all her loved ones, especially her children and grandchildren. The family apologizes to any family members that may have been missed. A Wake Service will be held at the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society on Monday May 28/12 starting at 3pm. May 29/12 will be at Robert/Randy Jim residence in Fountain, BC where a traditional funeral service will be on Wed., May 30/12 @ 10:00 am. Burial will be at the Fountain Cemetery with a feast to follow at the Fountain Community Hall. Arrangements entrusted to First Memorial Funeral Services, Kelowna, BC (250)762-2299.
