It is with love, gratitude, and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Irving Nelson on July 28, 2025, at the remarkable age of 102. Born on December 11, 1922, in Edmonton, Alberta, to Arthur Irving Nelson and Maud Mary Nelson (nee Cooke), a CN Rail family. Don lived a long and meaningful life marked by service, integrity, and devotion to family. He married Eleanor Irwin in 1948, and together raised four children. Eleanor passed away in 2005. Don married Eileen Minter in 2006. Eileen passed away in 2023. Both wives held cherished places in his heart. Don was also predeceased by brother Robert, who died in action in France during the Second World War, and brother Jack. Don was a loving and dedicated father to his four children: Louise Nelson, Patricia Nash, Margaret Nelson, and Andrew Nelson. He was also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy in his later years.
Don grew up in Kamloops and Vancouver, British Columbia, and graduated from Kitsilano High School in 1939. In 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving overseas in England as a radar mechanic until the end of the Second World War. He was proud to serve his country and spoke of his time in the RCAF with deep respect and humility. After returning home, Don pursued an engineering degree at the University of British Columbia, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, Don joined the sales team at Ingersoll-Rand, a career that took him to Kirkland Lake, Toronto, Sudbury, Montreal, Vancouver, Trail and finally Calgary. Don and Eleanor then retired to Summerland. Don enjoyed living on Okanagan Lake, golfing and going on many, many cruises and bus tours. He also attended and volunteered at St. Stephen Anglican Church in Summerland.
A good-natured man, Don’s quiet strength, kindness and humility always shone through. Don’s family greatly appreciate the excellent care he received from his doctors and the entire staff at Hawthorn Park and Orchard Manor in Kelowna. You are awesome!
