February 3, 1926 – February 4, 2017
Joan de Pfyffer passed away peacefully at the Kelowna general Hospital on February 4, 2017, as a result of a massive stroke.
She is predeceased by her husband Charles who passed away July 4, 2012; her son Russell, December 7, 2016 and granddaughter Mikyn, July 24, 2012. She is survived by her three remaining children, Christine (Bill), Jerryl (Paul), and Richard (Cindy); Janeene – Russell’s widow; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a large extended family.
Mom had all the titles a lady accumulates through life, but we believe the one she felt so honoured having was that of Great Grandma. She was always eager to hear any and all stories of the antics of her great grandchildren, which most certainly kept her laughing.
Laughter was the most important thing in mom’s life. Her ability to laugh and make people laugh was one of her great qualities. We humbly hope this trait has been successfully passed down to her children, grandchildren, and on to the generations to come. She taught us all the ability to “look for the laugh” and to find a way to bring joviality to the moment.
Mom was born in Vernon, BC, and moved to Kelowna while in her teens. She met dad soon after moving to Kelowna, and they were happily married for 66 years. In 1968, she and dad bought the KLO General Store in East Kelowna, and were proud owners for 20 years.
Joan was a strong community member where she held many leadership roles from that of being Tawny Owl – Girl Guides of Canada; a Sunday school teacher; president of the elementary school PTA; president of the Lady Lions Chapter to Captain of the Gallagher’s Ladies Golf League. Needless to say, she was a strong, take charge kind of gal.
Her passions were cards of any kind, most especially Bridge, which she was still playing to her last day, and golf. She loved her golf, which only a few years ago she had to give up.
We would like to thank all of the nurses at KGH, whom so graciously looked after our mother with their skill, wonderful kindness, and caring.
Our mother will be missed by many. Please keep her in your memory, talk of her often, and remember the fun and happy times you had with her.
A Celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 2710 East Kelowna Road, Kelowna, BC V1W 4A5, The Ven. Trevor Freeman officiating.
