March 28, 1927 – February 24, 2013
Doug, beloved husband of 63 years to Dorathy, died without suffering in Kelowna, B.C., at the age of 85 years.
He was both a gentleman and a gentle man, who dearly loved his family and was kind to all of nature’s creatures. Doug was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and grew up in Dauphin, Manitoba. As a strong, 6’ 4” young man, he worked for CN Railway and later earned his welder’s ticket. He then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, becoming an excellent driver and heavy equipment operator. He served in the Canadian Forces for nearly 20 years, raising four children with Dorathy in various places, including: Winnipeg, Manitoba; Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; and Whitehorse, Yukon. After his honourable release from the Canadian Forces, he operated his own home handyman business. Doug, Dorathy (“Dottie”) and their children created a home in the Yukon bush at Echo Lake, a place of cherished memories for 26 years. Doug and Dorathy then moved to a forested acreage near Edson, Alberta, and then to Kelowna, B.C. Whenever they moved, it was always to be closer to their children. By example and on frequent camping trips, Doug taught his children to respect nature, to be independent and to stand up for the things they believed in. He was happiest sipping red wine and sharing stories at a family meal or around a campfire, feeding ‘his’ wild deer and birds, and puttering at his workbench.
Doug is survived by his loving wife and partner Dorathy (nee Davies); their children Mark (Elona), Patti Toleman, Bruce (Gloria), and Grant (Susan); grandchildren Jese, Tobias, Mandy, Jonathan, Becky and Katie; and Doug’s youngest sister Joyce Dobson.
As Doug requested, there will be no services.
He will be with us always in our hearts; his ashes will be scattered in Alberta and in the Yukon, on the land and in the waterways he loved. If desired, donations may be made to the local Society for the Protection of Animals or animal shelter.
Condolences may be sent to the family through the guest book at www.valleyviewfuneralhome.com.
