It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Collier. Gary is survived by his loving wife June of 49 years, son Ross (Katie), son Neil, grandchildren Kellen and Paige, mother-in-law Edith Moffatt, sisters Caroline (Tom), Alice (Bernard), Susan (Bruce), nephews Trevor and Paul, nieces Monica and Laura, and brother-in-law Terry. Gary was predeceased by his daughter Lynn, niece Jan, father Art, mother Penny, step-mother Molly, step-father Norman Eagleback, father-in-law Burnie, and brother-in-law John.
Gary was born in Fort MacLeod Alberta and raised in Calgary. His grandma Collier was vital in raising him in his formative years and they shared a strong, loving bond until her passing. Following high school, Gary attended Mount Royal College where he was a member of the basketball team. Basketball continued to be a large part of his life following his college days, sharing his passion with others, coaching boy's and girl's teams. Gary enjoyed watching his sons play sports, rarely missing an event. He especially enjoyed watching the yearly Western Canada Tournament at Kelowna Senior Secondary.
Gary was a salesman for 29 years at Burns Foods Ltd, starting in Calgary before transferring to Kelowna in 1974. Gary won numerous awards throughout his career, including the "pork king" of Canada while with Burns. Gary then worked at Ditto's Office Services with his close friend Walter Makortoff where he received a community award for 'Exceptional Service'. Gary travelled throughout the Okanagan for work purposes, making lifelong friends with other salesmen and customers. Despite Gary's large stature he was a gentle giant, and his outgoing, friendly nature won him friends wherever he went.
Upon retirement, Gary and June enjoyed taking cruises and seeing the world together. Gary was a very committed, fiercely loyal family man. He had a special bond with his daughter Lynn who passed away in 2001. Gary's mother- in-law Edith was also very special to him. Gary valued the relationships and bonds he established with friends. A special thank you to Jack, Bruce, Bill, Ben, and the rest of the daily coffee group that met at McDonald's every morning for several years. Each of you were important to him and added so much joy to his life. To remember Gary, join a friend for coffee!
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brain Trust Canada or a charity of your choice in memory of Gary.
