He only regretted leaving those that he loved behind as his strength had gradually diminished and he could no longer carry on.
Gerry is predeceased by his sisters Jean and Marybelle. He is survived by his loving wife of 58-years Bonnie, his children Jacqueline (Alan Ross), Russell and Gregory, and his grandchildren Owen and Chloe. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Norm Archer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerry was born in Bassano, Alberta (but lived in “Little D” – Duchess, Alberta) to Matthias and Lida Purcell on March 24, 1940.
After a brief stop in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island, the Purcells would return to Alberta and make their home in Calgary where Gerry, and his two older sisters, would attend school.
He attended university in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology before marrying Bonnie, his high-school sweetheart. Following his graduation Gerry attended dental school and began his career by joining the Royal Canadian Dental Corps in 1964. Stationed at Namao, Captain Purcell and Bonnie added first their basset hound, Irving, then two children, Jacqueline and Russell.
The family departed for British Columbia after Dr. Purcell had completed his service and travelled to the small town of Mission, where Gerry would establish a dental practice and make a home for his young family (which would soon grow with the arrival of a third child, Gregory).
Following retirement, Gerry and Bonnie moved to Kelowna, BC. Together they enjoyed the warm weather and continued to explore the world, eventually visiting over 40 countries.
Gerry had a hunger for knowledge and a great many interests including reading, woodturning, target shooting, contract bridge and cooking. He found great pleasure in the garden surrounded by colour and his precious rhododendrons. Dogs were constant companions throughout his life, and Whisper, the sheltie will keep his chair warm.
Gerry always put family first, and made many sacrifices to ensure that those dear to him were able to experience the world, and life itself, to the fullest, but always with respect and compassion. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
No service by request. A family tribute will be at the Hatzic Cemetary in Mission at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Canadian Cancer Society.
