Newt was born on a farm near Alexander, Manitoba in 1928 to parents Gus and Frances Yeomans. One of seven children, he grew up doing chores and riding a horse to a one room school house.
He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in civil engineering in 1950. While there he met Helen Barnes whom he married in Winnipeg in 1951. They had 6 children together, born in various places as they moved from Winnipeg to Banff to Hay River, NWT to Edmonton to Saskatoon to Calgary to Ione, Washington and back to Calgary. Newt was never afraid to pack up everyone and move if an interesting project came up. After many years in Calgary, he got the moving itch again and hauled Helen and the younger three kids off to Mississauga, Vancouver and Edmonton.
Newt had a long career as a civil engineer working on the construction of many highways, dams and other large projects. He began working for the government of Manitoba highway department, spent many years with Mannix Construction Company in Calgary and eventually finished his career as Senior Vice President of PCL Construction in Edmonton.
Newt was an honest, hardworking guy. When he wasn’t working, he liked to do things with the family. He would round up all the kids and take us fishing in the summers and skiing in the winters. He took up sailing with Bob and Ron and they spent many hours on the water together.
Retiring at 65, Newt and Helen relocated from Edmonton to Kelowna searching for warmer weather. He spent his senior years curling in the winters and golfing in the summers.
Newt was predeceased by his parents, most of his siblings, and his son, James. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Helen Yeomans, and his remaining five children and their spouses – Gordon Yeomans and Zai, Gail Gainer and Jim, Bob Yeomans and Brenda, Ron Yeomans and Sophie and Nancy Wandler and Shannon. He is also survived by daughter-in-law Vera, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
