She got her teacher's certificate in September 1947. She met and married her husband Irvin Hoiland in July 1951.
They traveled to a service posting in Germany, where their son Paul was born in 1956. They returned to a posting in Quebec, where Ilene taught Grade 3 over the next 5 years.
Eventually moving to Calgary where Ilene taught until her retirement in 1986. They settled in Chilliwack where Irvin passed away in 2000.
Ilene moved to Penticton and later settled in Kelowna.
