Predeceased by her husband R.B. (Roy) Kerr in 1976, Margaret is survived by daughters Patricia and Anne; sons Michael, Peter and Mark; grandsons Roy, Andrew, John and David; grand-daughter Robyn, great grandsons Elliott, Nathan, and Julian; and Michael Brooke, Cindy Kerr, Jean-Michel Hanssens, Sara Bjorkquist and Brita Harrison-Brooke.
Born in Tynemouth, Northumberland England in 1911, Margaret was a proud ‘Geordie’ all her life. She attended Newcastle High School for Girls, trained for her R.N. at University College Hospital, London and specialized as a children’s nurse at Royal City Hospital, Edinburgh.
In 1937 she married Roy Kerr and they left immediately for Nigeria where Roy was serving with the British Colonial Service. Margaret and Roy lived in Nigeria and South Africa for some years, returned to Britain after the war, and emigrated to Canada in 1948. They were one of the early families to settle in the Cedar Creek area.
Margaret was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Church in Okanagan Mission, serving with the Anglican Church Women (ACW) for many years, singing in the choir, and writing a history of the church. She was instrumental in the planning of the new St. Andrew's Church. Margaret also pursued her life-long interest in Girl Guides, participating on various guiding committees in the area.
Margaret’s indomitable spirit, quick wit, and keen interest in a wide variety of topics will be remembered with great affection. She could always be counted on for a lively and informed discussion. She was a loyal friend. To her family she was a source of strength, inspiration and encouragement. Margaret will be greatly missed but always remembered with love and pride.
Although Margaret spent the greater part of her life in Canada, she always cherished her British roots and loved the Scottish saying, ‘Here’s tae us; wha’s like us.’
May she rest in peace.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mountainview Village, and all Margaret’s helpers, for their unfailing kindness and support. They also wish to thank Rev. Dr. Catherine Dafoe Hall and members of the St. Andrew's Church Guilds for their help. Any memorial donations may be made to the St. Andrew’s Building Fund.
