Ms. Avis Gloria Garvey, age 75, of Marietta, GA. died September 11, 2010. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 25, 2010, 11:00 AM at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw. Interment Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery, 1306 Whitlock Ave. NW, Marietta, GA.

Born in Jamaica West Indies, Avis Gloria Garvey, a Nurse Assistant and entrepreneur for over twenty-five years, immigrated to the United States in 1970, where she resided in Queens, NY, Davie, FL, and Marietta, GA with her children. She attended school in St. Anns, Jamaica and continued at Queensboro Community College in Queens, NY.

Gloria’s strong spirit and will to survive gave her the strength to overcome the many challenges she faced after having a stroke in 1998. An excellent cook with a servant’s heart, Gloria was most happy when she was helping others by opening her home every Sunday. She loved cooking a big pot of rice and peas, oxtails, and vegetables for any friend or family member who may have stopped by…and there were many visitors on Sundays. Christmas was extra special with her tasty Jamaican rum cake made with lots of love.

In addition to spending time crocheting blankets for family members, particularly her nine grandchildren, Gloria was an active member of the Richmond Hill Assembly of God in New York City and South Florida Church of Christ in Cooper City, FL.

Avis Gloria Garvey was preceded in death by her brother, Cantue Garvey, and is survived by five daughters, Heidie Richards-Brooks, Michelle Thompson, Karen Thompson, Nadine Thompson, and Diane Johnson; nine grandchildren, Rachelle Knowles, Jeremy Knowles, Onika Anglin, Marquis Williams, Evan Flowers, Matthew Brooks, Simeon Brooks, Ethan Tucker, and Trey Johnson; and sisters and brothers, Sylvia Barton, Thalia Glaves, Marjorie Garvey, Norma Rose, Olive Garvey, Jacinth Thomas, Joan Garvey, Marlene Garvey, Mark Garvey, Veronica Garvey. Several nieces,nephews and cousins.
