Mrs. Maxwell was born February 14, 1933, in Union Church, Alabama to parents Clarence L. and Bertie Almeda (Hatchett) Gaston. She put herself through Mobile Infirmary School of Nursing and graduated in 1953. Her nursing career included working as a surgical nurse for famed heart surgeon, Dr. Debakey, as well as a management position at Hillhaven Convalescent Center in Marietta, GA. In 1956 she married 2ndLt John T. Maxwell, Jr., USMC, and they remained a devoted couple for over 55 years. They had two children, John Turner Maxwell III, and Julie Ann Maxwell.
Mrs. Maxwell is survived by her son, John, and his wife Jennifer Brothers Maxwell; her daughter, Julie, and her husband Lt Col Kenneth E. Norman; grandchildren John T. Maxwell IV, Timothy I. Maxwell, Kenneth E. Norman II, Scott J. Maxwell, Andrew P. Maxwell, Grace E. Maxwell, and Christie E. Maxwell; brother Huey A. Gaston and his children Richard Gaston, Toni Green and Gaye Davis; and many dear friends.
A kind and generous Southern lady, Mrs. Maxwell believed in giving back to the community and volunteered extensively with the Red Cross, the Officers' Wives Clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was most noted, though, for her gift of hospitality. There was always a meal available to friends, family and passersby. She loved to cook, garden, and most of all, she loved to laugh, gifts she passed on to both of her children.
Bobbie was pre-deceased by her husband who went to be with our Lord in August of this year. She now joins him, and they will celebrate their favorite holiday—Christmas—together as always. She will be laid to rest with her beloved Sugar Foot in the Georgia National Cemetery, and on moonlit nights, expect to find them dancing together by the lake.
Viewing will be Saturday, December 22, 2012, 5:00-8:00 pm at Winkenhofer Funeral Home, 2950 Cobb Pkwy, Kennesaw, Georgia, 30152. Funeral service is Sunday afternoon, 2:00 pm, same location. There will be no graveside service.
