Kenneth Lee Ely of Marietta, GA entered heaven peacefully on January 13, 2022, surrounded by his family who adored him. He was born April 23, 1936, in Steubenville, Ohio to the late George Ely and Violet Barrett who struggled to raise two girls and seven boys during the Depression.
Ken’s first entrepreneurial endeavor was at 15 years old by using his Flyer Wagon to carry groceries to customers’ cars for 25 cents. Determined to make a better life for himself, Ken moved to Cleveland as a young man and after years of hard work, became a pioneer in the Recycling Industry. He was admired and respected for his kindness, professionalism, and ethics. His jovial personality and generous nature earned him many lifelong friends. His children fondly remember he was the parent who brought hot chocolate or fresh melons for all their friends after playing games in the park. He helped as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Knights of Columbus, or anyone who needed advice or a helping hand. Always generous with his time, his children and friends counted on his assistance, guidance, and handy work.
In 1980 Ken moved to New Orleans and married his soul mate Marcela with whom he spent the happiest 41 years of his life. With his dedication and business savvy, he again established his name in the recycling business. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling all over the world, with Marcela and her two daughters. He spent his free time fishing, boating, and was the primary shopper and chef at home. He treated the family with many delicious meals sampling the local cuisine.
In later years, Ken and Marcela moved to Acworth and Marietta, Georgia. He loved playing board games with the grandchildren. With his large heart and larger laugh, he delivered Happy Birthday renditions on the phone for relatives and friends. Early on, his grandchildren would delight in lawnmower rides Ken provided in the backyard.
Ken never met a stranger. With his loving personality and humorous demeanor, he became part of several groups - poker, dominoes, and the Panera Coffee Club. He and his buddies would dole out advice to the young workers at Panera Bread. He treasured his Panera friends and looked forward to their daily meetings to discuss everyday events and how they could save the world.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Dorothy and Florence, brothers Donald, Charles, Harold, John, and William Ely, and son Kevin Ely.
He is survived by his beloved wife Marcela; brother Thomas Ely; children Kenneth Ely Jr., Keith Ely (Dawn Vincent), daughters Dolores Farrer (Scott MacMurdo), Catalina Farrer (Eric Bosch) and by Anne Ely who was like a daughter; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and cherished family in Ecuador where he was lovingly known as Kenito.
Ken leaves a legacy of love and humor. While we mourn the loss of his departure, we are grateful for the time we had with him. He was a wonderful role model; a true friend and we are all better people for having had him in our lives.
We will always remember Ken’s blue eyes and easy smile. He will be forever loved and forever missed.
