

Marie K. Akin, formerly of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2026, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Akin, of 48 years. Marie and John had a good life together raising their two sons, traveling, square dancing, and spending time with family, including many family beach vacations. They were active members of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta where Marie served many years in different ministries.
She was born in Atlanta and raised in the West End community, the daughter of the late Roy and Helen Kilburn and was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Kilburn and sister-in-law Jean.
After attending Girls High School (Atlanta), Marie graduated from Brown High School and kept many lifelong friendships attending Brown reunions for many years. Besides being a devoted mother to her two sons, she did layout work for the yellow pages at Ruralist Press in Atlanta.
She is survived by her sons, Roy Akin (Joy) and Richard Akin (Susan); grandchildren Jake Akin (Rachel) and Emily Frey (Harrison); six great-grandchildren, Lexi and Sadie Frey, Bricelyn, Maggie, Lilah and Walker Akin.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 6, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw, Georgia. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta. If so inclined, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the Food Ministry at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 731 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30308, where Marie helped serve the homeless for many years.
