

Retired U.S. Marine
Major Robert A. Baer, a U.S. Marine for 26 years died on August 31, 2020. He was 88 years old. He started his own career as a Marine Private and served ten years as an enlisted man. Promoted to Warrant Officer and later 2nd Lieutenant, he retired as a Major in 1976. The Major served in both Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. His final assignment was at the National Security Agency, Ft. Meade, MD.
For his post military career he joined Pinkerton, Inc. and was transferred to Atlanta in 1978. He served as District Manager of the local Pinkerton's Nuclear Division, he resigned and joined Advance Security, Inc. as Vice-President of Operations. He retired from the security industry in 1994.
Born in Massachusetts, he was accompanied by his wife of many years, Elizabeth (Betty), when transferred to Atlanta. He and his wife have been East Cobb residents for over 40 years.
Major Baer was an avid boating enthusiast, and was Past-Commodore of the NAS Atlanta Yacht Club. He was a member of the Marine Corps Cryptologic Association, the Marine Corps Association, the American Legion, and the North Georgia Retired Military Association.
Major Baer was married in 1954 to the former Elizabeth M. Piirainen of Worcester, Massachusetts. The couple have three children, Robin (Loomis) of Sugar Hill, Steven of Canton and Cynthia (Lahr) of Woodstock. The couple enjoyed eight grandchildren, one great grandson and one great granddaughter.
A funeral service to honor Major Robert A. Baer will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 3:00pm at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for visitation between 12:30pm and 3:00pm. He will be laid to rest at Pineridge Memorial Park following the service.
