Robert Joseph Simmons

Robert Joseph Simmons, age 83, of Marietta GA passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2024 after fighting a courageous battle of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Bob was born on July 17, 1941 in Sugar Grove, WV, the son of the late Herschel and Clora Simmons.

Bob moved to Staunton, VA as a young man where he met and married the love of his life Judith Kay Beck, also of Staunton. The marriage was blessed with two children, Michael Scott of Boston, MA and Terri Lynn of Powder Springs, GA.

After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute he commenced career long employment at DuPont Corporation where he retired after 40 years of dedicated service.

Bob had many hobbies and interests including art, reading, golf and spending time in the mountains. His true passion was found later in life as a self taught musician of the guitar, and most fondly his joy of sharing his gift with his “jam” buddies, singing and playing bluegrass and gospel within the surrounding retirement communities. He and Judy were also members of Eastwood Baptist Church in Marietta, GA.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Anna (Bursaux) Simmons of Boston, MA; a daughter and son-in-law, Terri (Simmons) and David Fritz of Powder Springs; a sister and late brother-in-law, Pat and Charlie Phillips of Stuarts Draft, VA; eight grandchildren, Erin, Zachary, Emily, Samuel, Leah, Anna, Michael and Noa; and great grandchildren, Christian, Charlotte and Jordan.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 18th, 2024 from 11-12:00 pm, with a funeral service from 12-1:00 pm and a short graveside service to follow. A reception will conclude the celebration of the life of Robert “Bob” Simmons. All events will take place at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home, 2950 N Cobb Pkwy, Kennesaw, GA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Salvation Army as this organization was very near and dear to Bob, and where he spent many years of service “ringing the bell” at Christmas time.
