Berk passed away peacefully in faith from this world to the next at Lake of the Woods District Hospital at the age of 89 yrs.
Berk is survived by his two sons, Scott (Linda) of Kenora, Michael (Linda) of Thunder Bay and his grandchildren Kara, Erik (Lizzy Everest) and Savanna. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Cathy (Frank) Farmer of Richmond Virginia, nieces Deborah, Melissa and Kerry.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 yrs. Edna Faye Newman, an infant son Andrew, his parents Ernest and Lillian, his mother and father-in-law Kerchner and Marion Barr, his brother and sister-in-law, Winton and Betty, and nephews Matthew and Lance Newman.
Berk was born in Winnipeg MB. In 1939 his family moved to Kenora, where his father started a Jewellery business. He grew up in Kenora and graduated from Kenora District High School. He attended Queens University in 1955, where he got his Bachelor of Science degree. From there he entered the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto and graduated in 1960. He then went on to Intern at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland from 1960-61. It was there that he met the love of his life, Edna, they courted briefly and then married and moved back to Kenora, where he started a career in General Dentistry for 31 years and retired in 1992. Berk and Edna enjoyed snowbirding to Florida for 10 years, travelled Europe and went on cruises in his retirement.
Berk was very busy and loved to give back to his community by being active in service clubs. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Ontario Dental Association for 8 years; a 50+ year member of the ODA; the District Governor (National Executive) of the Kinsmen Club in 1972; a Member of the Kenora Police Commission for 13 years and served several years as Chairman (1970-1983); a past Master of the Lake of the Woods Masonic Lodge (1990); a member of Khartum Shrine Club (Winnipeg) and the Kenora Shrine Club; a 60+ year member of the Kenora Golf Club and Kenora Curling Club. Berk was very rooted in his Christian faith and was a parishioner of St. Alban’s Cathedral since childhood, where he volunteered for many positions in the church. He served on Vestry for several years.
A service of thanksgiving for the life and witness of Berkeley Gordon Newman will be held at St. Alban’s Cathedral on July 27, 2024 at 1:00pm with Reverend Marion Jackson officiating. Interment will follow the service.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brad Kyle, Char and the palliative care team, and the nurses on 3E at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
