November 20, 1936 – December 21, 2016
Chris Scutt, a resident of Pinecrest Home for the Aged, passed away suddenly on December 21, 2016 at the age of 80 years.
She is survived by her children Will (Miriam) and Beth and grandchildren, Katie and Sarah. She is also survived by her brother, Edvind Ellila. Chris was predeceased by her husband Nelson, mother Margaret (nee Fairbairn), father William McIntyre, stepfather Ivan Ellila and sister Marie.
Chris was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Her father died of malaria while serving with the British Army in Tunisia; and it was after that that her mother met and married Ivan.
In a very unusual way, Chris ended up spending her child and teenage years in Churchill, Manitoba.
When Norway was occupied, free Norwegians answered the call to arms. When hostilities ceased, the soldiers were returned to the places from which they travelled to enlist. For Ivan, that meant Churchill. So, as a young child she and her mother made the journey to Churchill from Scotland at war’s end. Chris often recalled that as other war brides and children got off the train in larger cities, she and her Mum wondered what they had gotten themselves into as their passage continued into the far north!
Chris met and married her husband Nelson in Churchill and followed him through various postings with the Ministry of Natural Resources Air Service until finally landing in Kenora in 1966.
She loved to quilt, knit and sew. For many years she knit hats and mittens for the hospital maternity ward. She also bought Barbie dolls and furnished them with two outfits each to send to children in orphanages overseas. And, of course, for her family she created blankets, socks, mitts and sweaters, the likes of which they will not see again. Her son, Will, has a particular Icelandic sweater that he cherishes; it will always remind him of his Mum.
Chris believed in contributing to the life of her community. She was a Red Cross Homemaker for a number of years; an active member with the Anglican Church Women at St Alban’s; and helped lead the Cub Pack that her son belonged to.
Chris was very proud of her Scottish heritage. She travelled to Scotland several times and especially loved to visit her Scottish cousins and the many sites of that country.
Dementia took hold of Chris many years ago and so although this is a sad time for her family, there is some relief that she is finally free of the disease.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 2:00pm at Knox Church with a private family burial to be held on a future date.
If so desired, donations in honour of Chris could be made to the Alzheimer’s Society Kenora/Rainy River Districts, 618 – 9th Street North, Kenora Ontario, P9N 2S9 or a charity of your choice.
