January 10, 1923 – January 29, 2013
It is with deep sadness that the family of Clinton Stagg announce his promotion to glory on Tuesday 29 January 2013 at Birchwood Terrace. Dad was born and raised in Hamilton, ON and was predeceased by his father Richard and mother Frances, Thelma’s still-born twin, his infant son Peter John, and his infant son Richard David. He leaves behind his soul mate Freda, daughter & son in law Thelma & Dennis, Granddaughter and Grandson-in-law Sandra & Matt, Granddaughter Tania and great grandson Ryan.
He had a very hard childhood but grew up to be a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He joined the army and served in The Royal Canadian Medical Corps during WWII. After de-mobbing he travelled to Guernsey, Channel Islands to stay with relatives, where he met his sweetheart & soul mate Freda. They were married in October 1947 and recently celebrated 65 years together. They settled in Hamilton and in ‘49 were blessed with Thelma, his ‘bird’.
In later life dad had the opportunity to re-commence his calling to the ministry and so began his next lease of life as a Captain in the Salvation Army, this was his everything. In 1980 his final posting as an officer brought him and Freda to Kenora, they fell in love with the town and made it their retirement town. Although he officially retired in 1987 he was very active within the Ministerial, he carried on performing marriages and funerals well into the 90’s, was a regular visitor and chaplain at the Kenora jail, the Legion and the Young Offenders Correctional Facility. He also regularly attended the Rotary luncheons. His love of life was very contagious and he always had time to say hello on his way past. He was known to visit the bars on weekends, in full uniform with his collection bucket, many hands were dipped into pockets and purses during these visits.…. His most favourite type of ministry was to the youth that were incarcerated at Muriel Lake, here he really felt he made a difference.
In 2006 Thelma & Dennis made his day by moving back to Canada after being away for 38 years, closely followed 1 year later by Sandra, Matt & Ryan. He and Freda spent most of their retirement at Benedickson Court They were first couple to move in and had the pick of apartments. Morning coffee with the guys was something not to be missed!
The family would like to thank the staff at Birchwood Terrace for their care and compassion and for making him and Freda feel so at home.
Visitation will be from 12.00 – 2.00pm on Monday 4th February, 2013 at Knox United Church, immediately preceding the celebration of Clint’s life beginning at 2.00pm. A reception will follow downstairs, in the gym. Internment will be at Lake of the Woods Cemetery. If you so wish, donations can be made in Clint’s name to the Salvation Army, Lake of the Woods Community Church or a charity of your choice.
