Doris McDonald
June 20, 1924 – July 11, 2014
Peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital, our mother Doris Ellen passed away with her family at her side. Mum is survived by her son Allan and wife Janice and their children, Jeffrey, Jonathon and Jessica and her daughter Carol and her children Jennifer (Cody), Erica (Darin), Kristine and Pamela and 10 great grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her eldest brother Bill Kenton, nieces June and Eileen and nephew Frank all of Farnborough, England. She was predeceased by husband Donald, her parents and brother Fred Kenton.
Mum was born on June 20, 1924 in Farnborough Cove, Hampshire, England, the only daughter of Frank and Kate Kenton. Our father, Don was a young Canadian soldier and when they met, their destiny was sealed. They married in Farnborough in 1944 and she emigrated to Canada in 1946 aboard the Queen Mary with their young son Allan. They began their early years in Winnipeg and later moved to Kenora where they spent the rest of their years. In October of 1995, mum and dad went on a holiday to England to celebrate mum’s father’s 100th birthday and it was there that our dad passed away suddenly, leaving a deep void in all of our lives.
Mum loved wildlife and nature and all that it offered with a keen eye for bird watching. Family pets will miss her visits as she always had treats tucked away in her bag for them. She also had a knack for making the best egg salad sandwiches and shortbread cookies! Mum loved her family above all. She will be remembered for her strength and resilience.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the CCAC program which allowed mum to enjoy her last months in the comfort of her home with special thanks to Alana for her support and kindness. Thank you to Dr. Jim Beveridge who tended to mum with thoughtfulness and dedication over many years. Our heartfelt thanks to Jan Landseidel and the nursing staff for 2E for their compassion and care during mum’s last few weeks.
Immediate cremation has taken place with a private family interment. A luncheon celebration of Doris’s life will be held on Thursday, July 24 at 12:00 p.m. in the common room at Southward Villa, located at 202 Sixth Street South.
“Who fed me from her gentle breast, and hush’d me in her arms to rest, and on my cheek sweet kisses prest? My Mother.” Jane Taylor (1783-1824)
