It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mama. Elsie Blackhawk has gone home to be with her Saviour on February 17, 2018. Elsie (Kabeek) was born on April 11, 1925 at Northwest Angle #33 First Nation. She was predeceased by her husband Russell Mallett, son Dwayne and grandson Darryl, brother Frank Sandy Sr., Ronald Sandy, her sister Eleanor Ringling, father Fred Sandy, mother Alice Sandy and her son in-law Otto Quedent. She was much loved by all her children and will be greatly missed by daughters Margaret Kakegamic (Charlie), Elaine, Joyce, Annette Sermeno (Roberto), Grace Gladu (Adam), Raven, Cree, and her sons Melvin (Maria), Albert, and Alex (Laura). She is also survived by her siblings Leslie Sandy, Elizabeth Sandy, Kenneth Sandy and her sister-in-law Mabel Lazar. She leaves behind many grandchildren, Wanda Kakegamic, Gordon Kakegamic, Bruce Kakegamic, Jennifer Kakegamic, Melvin Jr. Blackhawk, Lyric Blackhawk, Courtney Fennell, Chelsea Blackhawk, Jonathon Mallett, Lorinda Mallett, Alberts Mallett, Tracey Mallett, Sarah Blackhawk, A.J Hunter, Aaron Hunter, Dawn Hunter, Roberto Sermeno, Yesenia Sermeno, Antonio Sermeno, Dan Gladu, Rachael Hart, Ryan Lowe and many great great grandchildren. She had a great love for her savior and wasn't afraid to share the good news of the gospel with anyone who would listen. She raised her family on the Northwest Angle #33 First Nation and lived the anishnabaa way of life. She enjoyed harvesting wild rice and teaching her family how to do it. She loved to work on her fishing nets and every summer she would have the girls set the net with her by canoe or using her rickety boat as she called it. She took pride in doing whatever she could to provide for her family. Everything she did was out of love. She taught her children and grandchildren many life skills which helped them to be strong and independent individuals. She was always concerned about the well- being of others. Her home was open to all. She especially enjoyed visitors who dropped in on her and had conversations in Ojibway. She accepted life for what it was, hardships and all. She was a woman of all trades, she could make old things new again. She had a knack for fixing things using her ingenuity and improvisations. In her hay day she made snowshoes, moccassins and buckskin jackets with deer and moose hides that she tanned herself and sold. She was also a skillful intricate beader. She was a hard working anishinaabaakwe in her traditional ways. She didn’t have much, but she always shared. She was our rock. We will miss her very much. Pallbearers are Roberto Sermeno, AJ Hunter, Jonathan Mallett, Dan Gladu, Bruce Kakegamic and Ryan Lowe. Honourary pallbearers are Melvin Blackhawk Sr., Albert Mallett, Alex Mallett, Melvin Blackhawk Jr. and Lyric Blackhawk. The family would like to thank Lake of the Woods Hospital and Pinecrest Home for the Aged for the care Mama received.
