Our dad, Floyd James Assin traditionally named “Kiiwetanwewitang” (Kii-way-ta-nway-wi-tung) of the Atik (Caribou) Clan (Dootem) passed away peacefully with his baby “princess” Jamie, other children, as well as family and friends at his side, at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora.
Dad enjoyed spending time with friends and family. In his younger days he enjoyed playing hockey as a forward and traveling around to hockey tournaments where the Grassy Narrows Rockies were sometimes victorious.
He enjoyed drives to Kenora and in the backroads where he would shoreline fish and just enjoy nature. When kokooms Nelly and Maggie were around they complained that dad must have known of a secret city in the bush.
We would like to thank all the friends and family that came all the way to Thunder Bay to visit him during his time at TBRHSC and St. Joseph’s Care. And just from the time he came to live with me and my younger sisters in late December 2023.
Secondly, all the doctors and nurses, cultural care workers, and social workers at TBRHSC, TB Cancer Care, St. Joseph’s hospital and Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Thanks for putting up a good fight and for the continuous encouragement to never lose hope! And when dad’s body could fight no more, gichi-miigwetch for helping us cope through this last phase of his life. Your compassion and care and your will to pull this transfer off at the right moment is an act we will all truly be grateful for. Oh and of course, lastly and not one we did not want to acknowledge: nurse Kathleen in Grassy, thank you for looking out for dad when he was there.
Dad/shoomis/brother is survived by his children: his only son Tyson, his daughters Jessica, Jamie, Diane (Mike), Michelle (Les), Rebecca. Brothers: Chad (Miranda), Fred (Rita), Justin, and sisters: Jackie (Clifford Sr.), Pauline (Wayne). Grandchildren: Cielle, Cale, Tegan, Piper, Micko, Emree, Kamerian, Samy, Toot, Zhaawan, Lyndon, Joe, Makwa, Wabs, Peter, Shanice, Shayne. And many nieces, nephews, and cousins, too numerous to mention.
We would like to acknowledge dad’s best friends/cousins: Marty, Darren, Lionel, Ryan K., Muskrat (Patrick), Lucy, and Piiyaash (Jennifer). Gichi-miigwetch for being dad’s best pals!
