May 28, 1939 – November 4, 2017
With loving family by his side, Grant passed away at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital on Saturday, November 4th, 2017 after a valiant battle with cancer.
Grant was born in Kenora on May 28, 1939 to his parents Gunnar and Edna. He attended local schools. Upon graduating, he commenced employment with the C.P Express, then went onto Marr’s Marine and later became a partner with Bill Marr and Garth Nelson at Nelson’s Leisureland and finally a Service Advisor at Dingwall Ford after which he retired. Grant was a great outdoorsman and was an avid hunter and fisherman and passed this love onto his children and family. Besides enjoying the Lake of the Woods, he was also an accomplished golfer having earned the title of Kenora Golf & Country Club Men’s and Sr. Men’s Champion six times. One of his proudest moments on the golf course this past summer was when he shot his age – 78. He was also an accomplished curler and was privileged to represent the Northwestern Ontario curlers at the McDonald Men’s Brier in Oshawa on the Terry Johnson rink in 1969. Grant truly enjoyed the time he spent with his many friends, whether it was playing golf, having coffee with the KIA guys or playing crib. He enjoyed puttering around the yard and in his basement workshop, always trying to find ways to invent or improve something. Grant was a true family man who showed his love in many ways and was so proud of his children and his beloved granddaughters.
Grant was predeceased by his parents, Gunnar & Edna, his stepfather Stanley Pearson and his in-laws Joe & Nettie Favreau.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lorraine, son Gerry (Joan), daughter Janice (Scott) and his beautiful granddaughters Kaitlin and Stephanie, his sister Diane (Gord) Webb), many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will also be missed by his “furry” grand dogs Asham and Macey.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff on 3rd East for their care of Grant during his short stay at the hospital. Also thanks to Dr. J. Retson and Dr. B Bowerman.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Notre Dame du Portage Church on Saturday, November 18th, 2017 at 11:30 am with Deacon Earl Johnson presiding. Luncheon will follow in the Parish Hall after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Notre Dame Church Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
A SILENT TEAR
Just close your eyes and you will see
All the memories that you have of me
Just sit and relax and you will find
I’m really still there inside your mind
Don’t cry for me now I’m gone
For I am in the land of song
There is no pain, there is no fear
So dry away that silent tear
Don’t think of me in the dark and cold
For here I am, no longer old
I’m in that place that’s filled with love
Known to you all, as “up above”
