Miizhakiwaankotook – Caribou Clan
March 18, 1981 – January 14, 2026
The family is saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, daughter, sister, and grandmother, Janine Melissa Major, on January 14, 2026, in Kenora, Ontario.
Janine was born on March 18, 1981, in Kenora to Francis C. Sandy Sr. and the late Maryanne Major (Kakeway).
Janine is survived by her children Aaliyah (Rielly), Trece, Teesha, Troy, and Brielle, her grandchildren Alizah, Alijah, and Zion.
She is also survived by her father: Francis C. Sandy Sr. Her siblings: Kevin (Dina), Deanna (Joe), Charlene, Terry, Fredick, and Jasmine. Along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Janine was predeceased by her mother, Maryanne Major (Kakeway), her infants Taniesha and Baby J (Alias), her grandchild, BabyA, her brother Francis (Chucky) Sandy Jr., her sisters Heather Rose Major and Tina Louise Major, her grandparents on both sides and many relatives who passed before her.
Janine was happiest when she was outdoors doing hands on activities. She was a woman of incredible strength and talent, known by many as a gifted builder. Whether she was framing a house, crafting a sturdy bench, or building a dresser from scratch, Janine had a natural ability to work with her hands and create things that lasted. She adored her children and cherished every moment spent with them, especially her youngest, Brielle.
Janine shared a special bond with her dad, often fishing and enjoying the "angle life" together. Whether she was out on the boat, taking an evening walk, or watching for eagles, she found peace in nature. She was known for her love of cooking and baking sweets, building houses in her reserve, and the joy she brought to the family. While she might have joked that saying someone “lit up the room” was too cheesy, her constant smile and vibrant spirit truly did just that. Janine was needed here more than words can express. Though she is gone, her heart lives on through her father, her family, and her beautiful children who carry her legacy forward.
A Celebration of Janine’s Life will be held on January 24th, 2026 at 3:00pm at Northwest Angle 33b Inlet side Community Hall. Traditional service to be delivered by elder Kenny Kakeeway on Sunday, January 25th, 2026 beginning at 10:00am with burial to follow at Northwest Angle 33 First Nation (Angle Inlet).
Pallbearers are Janine’s nephews Joshua Sandy, Dylan Sandy, Dennis Sandy, Austin Major, Brandon Major, Kevin Major Jr., Cole Major
