

John Paul Lavand Sr.
1938 - 2013
With his family by his side, John Paul Lavand Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 4, 2013 at Birchwood Terrace. He was 74 years old.
He is survived by his children Margaret, John Paul Jr., William and Claudie Indian (Jason). Grandchildren Jenilee Williams (John Sever), Kylie, Jonathon, Dawn Lynn Coffin (Steven), Jeffrey Indian, Jacie Indian and Ryan Little (Melany Meekis). Great-Grandchildren Travis and Tayden Sever-Williams, Kailey, Jeremy and Michael Packo, Dion Little and Zachary Coffin and remaining sibling Cherie Lavand. Plus numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents Charlie Lavand and Rosie Bluebird, his loving wife Bessie Lavand (Bunting), daughter Yvonne Williams (Lavand), son Marcel, brothers Mike and Steve Lavand, sisters Suzie Goulais (Lavand), Gertie Morrison, Vicki Guerin (Lavand) and his great-grandson Jordan Grey Packo.
John Paul Sr. was born in Kenora and later moved his family to Winnipeg, MB where they lived for many, many years. John Paul Sr. finally decided to move back to Wauzhushk Onigum Nation (Rat Portage Reserve) in Kenora, ON. He loved to golf. He used to go with his wife Bessie to bingo at the hall on Marion St. They could usually be found there on the three days it was open. He used to spend quality time with his family barbequing at Pow-Wow Island , Rushing River or at Bird’s Hill Park. He also loved going to the Red River Ex in Winnipeg. Even if he just walked around. John Paul Sr. used to be the Chief of Rat Portage Reserve. He used to be a fishing guide at Separation Lake, Big Narrows and Crow Rock and he also worked at the Kenora Jail as a Correctional Officer but later retired as a maintenance worker for the Golden Eagle Casino. John Paul Sr. also loved to talk and was always showing and telling us about different buildings, places and stories
There will be a 2 day wake starting on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 8:30 am-9 pm then again on Sunday, April 7, 2013 from 8:30 am-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 1 pm. Everything will take place at the Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. Cremation will follow. The immediate family will have a private ceremony in Dinorwic, ON at a later date.
A Celebration of John Paul’s life will be held at the Wauzhushk Onigum Community Hall on 2nd Portage on the Rat Portage Reserve following the funeral service.
