It is with deep sorrow and an abundance of love that we mourn the passing of Josephine Sandy (Nanan) of Northwest Angle 33 B. Josephine passed peacefully surrounded by her girls and her brother Ron Kelly at Lifecare Medical Centre in Roseau, Minnesota, she was 86 years old. Josephine was a wife, mother, sister, grandmother and a great-grandmother and auntie.
Josephine lived her life for her family and is survived by her girls, Karen (Gene, Jeremy, Nichole) , Kim (Tim), Ronni (Craig, Miranda), Dez, Laura, Brenda (Bernhard) and Cheryl and grands Brenden (Sarah), Dan (Alicia), Talia, Samara, Tatyana, Tristan, Graham, Raine, Adam, Amber, Cheyenne & Cayden, and great grands Dustin, Destini, Zoey, Eliana, Abigail, Paisley, Madisyn ,Eden, Aria, Cade and Kiana, as well as her siblings Ron Kelly, Florence Kelly, and Don Kelly. Moms best and closest companion her puppy Spice and a multitude of Nephews, Nieces, extended family and friends who loved her dearly and gave her a zest for life. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Ronald Sandy (Tanse).
Josephine was the first Female Chief in Treaty 3 territory, she was educated in the ways of the western world, and in her Anishinaabe culture. She was a Residential School survivor but maintained her faith in Christ to her last hours. She loved to spend time in nature, gardening with her late husband, admiring her flowers, birds, and she always looked forward to blueberry picking with her family. Josephine will be remembered as one of our most astute, wise and kind elders, the best Nanan, and a world class bannock maker, with a great sense of humor.
We would like to thank the staff of Lifecare Medical Center in Roseau MN. Dr. Vandewege and the nurses that cared for mom. Kasey Quamme RN, Greg Kennedy, Madison C Merissa Brandon and Becky, Miranda Tunheim FNPC. Special thanks to Dr Brad Kyle for taking such wonderful and loving care of our mom over the years.
Thanks to those who helped with the preparations at the community: Suzy Seymour, Cree, Raven, Earl, James, Achilles, Gene, RC, Geri and for the support of Chief Darlene Comegan and Councillor Diane Sandy.
Pallbearers will be Gene Pearson, Craig Bratland, Bernhard Wille, Brenden Sandy, Daniel Pearson, Tristan Wille, Dustin Pearson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Earl Hall, Brian Kelly, Chuck Sandy, Lance Sandy, Ryan Detweiler, Nancy Lee Blackhawk.
A celebration of her life will follow with a wake and service in Kenora and a graveside service with close family and friends at Northwest Angle 33 B. Visitation will be held on Friday August 9, 2024 from 12:00 to 8:30 pm at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. Service will be held on Saturday August 10, 2024 at 10:00 am at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. Interment will take place at Northwest Angle #33 B on Monday, August 12, 2024, 1:00 pm.
