July 18, 1939- December 5th, 2025
It is with deep sadness that the Wickman family announces the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Wickman of Kenora, Ontario on December 5th, at the age of 86.
Ken held numerous jobs in his early years, but his true dream was to become a bush pilot and to sell minnows from his home. Together with his beloved wife of 64 years, Betty, they made that dream come true when they founded Northern Bait & Tackle on Sandy Lake. It was there that they raised their two daughters and welcomed fishermen from both sides of the border with warmth, humour and a genuine love for the outdoors.
During the winter off season, Ken worked as a millwright with Local 1151, travelling across the North to mines and paper mills. He was known for his quick wit, unforgettable stories and the kindness he extended to everyone he met. Each fall, he also bought wild rice from local First Nations harvesters, just one of the many ways he stayed connected to the land and the people who relied on it.
At home, Ken was affectionately known as the “Jinx the Cat”. He survived plane crashes, car rollovers, snowmobile mishaps, and more than a few unexpected nights lost in the woods. From
the age of nine, he hunted to help feed his family, a skill and tradition that stayed with him throughout his life. He will always be remembered for his giving heart, bright smiles, tree loving
and famous jokes while sitting on the deck overlooking the lake.
On Friday, he told us he was going home and not to worry. When the call came, we knew that Jinx the Cat had boarded his Cessna 150 to take his last flight home up north.
Ken was predeceased by his parents Fred and Helga, brothers Stanley and Wesley, nephew Eric and niece Lynne.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty, daughters Wendy (Rene) Ouellette, Arlee (John) Mundy, grandchildren Taylor and Brett. He also leaves behind brother Gary and sister Shirley Janicki. Numerous sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Ken lived a life of courage, devotion, and unforgettable stories. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
“He walked the wild places, flew the open skies, and filled our lives with love.”
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will follow at a later date in 2026.
