Marion Elizabeth MacAdam, beloved wife of James Boulton and mother to Christopher Boulton-MacAdam passed away August 9th, 15 days before her 67th birthday. Marion had struggled with dementia for a number of years and chose Physician assisted suicide to end her life, rather than suffer the final indignities of the disease.
Marion is survived by her husband James Boulton, and her son Christopher MacAdam-Boulton, her step daughter Emilie Collins-Boulton, her sister Margaret MacAdam, and brothers John MacAdam, Murray MacAdam, Phillip MacAdam and Collin MacAdam, and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, John Harold MacAdam, and Marion Francis MacAdam (Dewis).
Marion spent the early part of her life in Halifax and was inordinately proud of her Nova Scotia roots. The family moved to Ottawa when Marion was in high school, where she completed her BA at St. Pat's College. Marion went on to hold teaching positions with Algonquin College in Ottawa, and several years with Frontier College, before returning to University to complete a Masters Degree at York University in Environmental Studies.
While working for Frontier College Marion spent much of her time in Northwestern Ontario where she made many friends and it was on a trip back to visit one of these friends she met Jamie Boulton. A passionate romance ensued and with the intention of sharing life's path together, Marion returned to the North country she had come to love.
Marion held a diverse repertoire of positions in Kenora; working for Confederation College as both a session master and a program supervisor, where she worked with many First Nation communities, assisting them to achieve their educational needs. She then moved on to become program co-ordinator for women in non-traditional trades and from there spent several years working as a program consultant for the Kenora Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and following that, the Kenora office of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
Marion gave generously of her time, volunteering with the Canadian Mental Health Association, and as one of the founding board members, she was involved in setting up the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Regional Foundation.
No matter what she did, Marion gave it her all, bringing to it, her passion, intelligence, and caring. Marion's passion for gardening paints the landscape around her and Jamie's home in glorious color and scents; a delight for all who visit and who often leave with baskets of vegetables from their abundant garden. As sole owner of the "Garden Wizard", Marion contracted out her gardening skills to bring beauty to many cottage properties on Lake of the Woods and it was a great sadness for her when her declining mental health robbed her of even the names of the many flower varieties she had known.
Annual canoe trips paddling the rivers and lakes of the North, were not only adventurous expeditions, as well life long friendships were cemented. Of all Marion's wonderful diversities, she was devoted to bringing the best of herself to parenting and being the best she could be for her son whom she cherished.
Marion was a unique, bright and diverse human being whose passing will be greatly felt in the hearts of all who loved her.
The family invites all those who knew our sweet Marion to join in a Celebration of her Life, to take place August 22, at Knox United Church 2 - 5pm.
