Mary Ellen Lemay

With her children by her side, Mary Ellen Lemay (née Murray) passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026, at the age of 93.

Born on January 1, 1933, to Hugh and Marie Antoinette Murray, Mary Ellen spent her entire life in Kenora, Ontario, where she raised her family and enjoyed many cherished years with her husband, Mederic, surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is lovingly remembered by her children Teresa (Ray), Maureen, and Murray (Joelle); her grandchildren Stacey (Darrin), Sean (Brie), Christopher, Jeff (Cindy), Amanda (John), Michelle (Vaughn), Eric (Sophia), Mathew (Vanessa), Megan (Devon), and Tyler; as well as her sister Kathy, sister-in-law Bev, and 14 great-grandchildren who affectionately called her “GG.”

Mary Ellen was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband of 70 years, Mederic; her eldest daughters, Debby and Louise; her son-in-law Dave; her grandson-in-law Darren; and her brothers, John Murray and Joe Delorme.

Mom often spoke fondly of the careers she held throughout the years, especially her time at CJRL Radio, the Kenora Welfare Office, and the Mining Recorder’s Office, where she retired.2

She had a lifelong love of knitting, sewing, and crafts, and took great joy in creating handmade gifts for family members — treasured keepsakes that will now hold even greater meaning.

Mom’s kitchen was always open to anyone who wanted a hot cup of tea, homemade rhubarb crisp, and good conversation around the kitchen table.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Pinecrest Home for the Aged for the care and compassion shown to our mother.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon.
