Matthew Cederwall on May 3, 2026 at the age of 73.
He married Stella in 1980 and was a devoted father to Tyson and
Kara. Over the years, he built and renovated a total of 4 homes for
his family. Always living close to the mill, Matt was always available
when any emergencies arose or repairs were needed.
Matt started working weekends at the Ontario Minnesota Pulp and
Paper Mill in 1972, while completing his grade 12, until it's closing in 2006 as Abitibi Consolidated. He had many certifications starting
with Steamfitter, Gasfitter, Pipefitter, Fire System Inspector and was
Team Leader of Emergency Response, Firefighting and Rescue for
the Kenora Mill. He was also a volunteer fire fighter for the City of
Kenora from 1982 to 2005.
Matt had every man's "dream garage/workshop". If you ever needed
to borrow a special tool or a part or just needed advice on how to fix something, Matt was your go to guy and his garage door was always open. He could fix and build anything and was always available to lend a hand or share his skills and expertise. When he wasn't tinkering in his garage, plowing everyone's driveways in the winter, doing plumbing on the side, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing,
snowmachining with his family and friends and spending a few years of weekends at Linklater Lake camp.
He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Matt is survived by his wife Stella, his children Tyson and Kara and
his brother Dale (Martha). He was predeceased by his parents Rudy
and Victoria Cederwall, father-in-law Steve Michalchuk and brother-
in-law Eugene Michalchuk. He will also be deeply missed by his
mother-in-law Olga Michalchuk, brother-in-law Melvin Michalchuk,
sister-in-law Judy Roos (John), numerous nieces and nephews, aunt, cousins, many friends and all those who have had the privilege of knowing him.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to family and
friends who helped Matt during his illness, the dedicated staff at
LOWDH for their exceptional care and support, Thunder Bay
Regional Hospital and St. Joseph's Stroke Rehab Thunder Bay.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's Choice.
