Mel was born in Windygates, Manitoba on October 13, 1912. The youngest of 3 children. He farmed until 1954; then due to an injury he left the farm for Redditt, Ontario where he drove taxi. He met the love of his life at the train station in Redditt where Ruth was working. After they married, they moved to Kenora in 1957. When he first moved to Kenora, Mel worked as a jail guard and then worked in the Post Office, where he took an early retirement to run his own taxi/bus service with Ruth. Mel had a postal contract delivering the mail to Grassy Narrows, Shoal Lake, Minaki and Whitedog, which he continued to operate until the end of 2011. Mel loved being with his family, and they went to the southwestern states every winter together.
A Celebration of Mel’s life will be held between 10:00am and 1:00 pm on June 9, 2012 at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre with a come & go. A private family burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to one’s charity of choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Hope there’s a motorcycle in Heaven when I get there, we can go riding.
Love and miss you always. Mom.
