Roman Joseph Zimmer
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roman Zimmer. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 31, 2013 at Pinecrest Home for the Aged at the age of 90 years. He was predeceased by his wife Anne and son Robert, his parents Joseph and Elizabeth Zimmer, his brother Herman Zimmer, his sisters Sylvia Carmody and Mary Donnelly, his brother-in-laws Earl Carmody and John (Jack) Donnelly, and his niece Audrey Zimmer-Milne.
Roman is survived by his sons Allan (Emilie) and Wayne (Alice), his grandchildren Susan (Richard Murphy) and Mercedes Zimmer, his great grandchild Clara Murphy, his brother Wilfred (Catherine) Zimmer, sister-in-law Florence Zimmer and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roman was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan on April 23, 1923 the oldest child of Joseph and Elizabeth Zimmer. Roman grew up quickly on the farm, learning at an early age the value of hard work. The family moved to Kenora in 1940 and Roman found a job delivering coal by horse and wagon. When he came of age Roman enlisted in the Navy and served aboard corvettes and destroyers until the end of the war. He returned home and went to work with the CPR. In 1949 Roman married Anne and they spent more than 57 years together. They travelled the world and spent more than 20 winters forming new friendships as snowbirds in Florida. In 1957 Roman started working at the local paper mill and stayed until his retirement.
Dad was a man of many talents. He was a carpenter, an electrician, a plumber, a mechanic. and accomplished gardener. He served as a treasurer for a credit union, helped start a dairy, was a Catholic School Board trustee and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid outdoorsman and taught us to cherish the outdoors. He was a kind and gentle man always giving of his time and talents to help others. No matter the circumstance Dad was always there. He is missed and will be lovingly remembered.
Words cannot describe the profound appreciation we have for the staff of Pinecrest. The loving care which all the staff provided with professionalism, sympathy, compassion and dignity brought this family untold comfort. Cremation has taken place and an internment will follow in the spring of 2014.
