August 30, 1973 – August 27, 2021
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shane Bice on August 27, 2021 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Shane was born on August 30, 1973 and was adopted at a young age by his parents, Maureen and Ken Bice. He was raised in Claresholm, Alberta where he spent a lot of time on his grandparents’ farm. He moved to Calgary on his own to finish his final year of high school, and then headed to Vancouver where he lived for 19 years and worked at a variety of jobs.
Shane moved to Kenora in 2012 to be with his love and best friend, Elissa Grynol, and began working at McMunn and Yates. In 2015 he began working at Riverview Industries and it was there that he discovered a true passion for metal fabrication. He operated the CNC table and took great pride in his work. He went to work early every day and was a dedicated, hard-working employee. Many of the pieces that he worked on can be seen around Kenora, such as the gates at Tall Pines Marina and the pug inside the Hungry Pug Café. Shane also found a real sense of family and belonging at Riverview. He loved being part of the crew and made good friends there. He enjoyed his early morning coffee chats with Riverview owner, Lou Mounk, and always appreciated the kindness, understanding, flexibility, and very generous support that Lou and Kavan extended him throughout his illness. He loved working at Riverview and often said that it was the best job he ever had. It was a very sad day for Shane when he had to stop working at the end of October 2020 as his illness made it impossible to continue.
On April 21, 2021 Shane and Elissa were married while he was in the hospital. The amazing staff at the Lake of the Woods Hospital went far beyond their regular duties to arrange a beautiful and touching wedding ceremony in the hospital chapel. It was truly the happiest day of Shane and Elissa’s lives.
Shane was an avid fan of WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). He had a huge passion for collecting WWE figures and memorabilia. He had a whole room set up at home to exhibit his collection and it brought him joy to spend time there organizing and setting up his display. He also made many friends among the online community of WWE fans.
Just like his beloved wrestlers, Shane was a tough fighter. He was first diagnosed with colorectal cancer in December 2012 and faced that formidable opponent with bravery and determination. He endured many rounds of radiation, chemotherapy, numerous difficult surgeries, complications, and setbacks, all while remaining positive and never complaining. Throughout much of it, he continued working through severe pain and sickness. Cancer may have inflicted countless holds, locks, throws, strikes, and pins to Shane’s body, but it couldn’t suppress his spirit, quick wit, or sense of humour. Unfortunately, Shane was not able to deliver the knock-out slam to cancer, but he stayed in the ring and fought with everything he had right to the final bell. He had a big heart and remarkable strength.
Shane was predeceased by his mother, Maureen Bice, in 1984, his father, Ken Bice, in 2008, as well as his grandparents Irene and Sam Street, Jean and Phil Bice.
Shane will be sadly missed by the love of his life, Elissa Grynol; his sister Candice Zillman (Chris), nephews Justyse and Jude of Abbotsford, B.C.; sister-in law Andrea Grynol (Gautam) and nephews Arjun and Krishna of Brandon, MB; mother- and father-in-law Mary Lee and Bill Grynol of Kenora, and his beloved cat and loyal companion, Millie. Shane will also be missed by his friends and co-workers, especially his best buddy, Jason Romas, for whom he had so much respect and admiration, and whose friendship he truly appreciated, as well as long time friends, Ricky, Jeff, Matt, and Dan, who Shane called his brothers.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all of the medical professionals who cared for Shane throughout his nine-year battle: Dr Simunovic of the Juravinski Cancer Center in Hamilton; Dr. Faghih of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center; Dr. Wykes, Dr. Hristov, and Dr. D. Kyle of Kenora; his homecare nurse, Emerson; and all of the nurses and doctors who cared for him during his many hospital stays. A very special thank you to his wonderful chemotherapy nurses, Stephanie, Tina, and Candice, and to his amazing palliative care team at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital over the past few months – Char M., Becca, Laura, Erin, Gladys, Char B., Suzzeet, Robin, Kaylene, Mel, Nida, Jess, Dayna, Judy, Dr. Ghazali, Dr. Giles, and Dr. Wong. Your care, both physical and emotional, and your compassion were outstanding and brought so much comfort during an extremely difficult time.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 11th which, due to Covid restrictions, will be by invitation only.
In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation in Shane’s memory, the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation and the Never Alone Cancer Foundation (neveralonefoundation.ca) are organizations to which Shane would have liked the opportunity to give back.

But by how well they can stand at the face of adversity”
