It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley “Hasum” White, age 77, at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
Shirley was a very social woman who valued her relationships with the people around her. She had a strong support network of family, friends and the community as a whole. She loved her bingo and going to casinos. She was a passionate jingle dress maker and loved creating for herself and for others. Shirley was a jack of all trades, she was an extremely talented bead worker, that enjoyed creating something with her own hands. Shirley was an admirable jingle dress dancer, that was still dancing pow-wows at 77 years old. She was a resilient woman that loved sharing her culture, teaching the culture and was also featured on Truth Talk speaking about “The Healing Dress”. Shirley was a proud community member of Naotkamegwanning First Nation “Home of the Jingle Dress” and a bright light in the lives of those around her.
Predeceased by her parents: John and Maggie White; Brothers: Dennis White, Maynard McCleod and Freeman “Tony” White Sr.; Her Uncle, Henry Bird; Paternal Aunts: Maggie Bird, Mary Copenace, and Catherine Crow; Paternal Uncles: Alphonse, Harry, and Frank; Maternal Aunts: Doris Henry and Alice Kelly; and Maternal Uncles Alfred and Clarence Henry; her two children: Liza Jane and Russell John; Her Nephews: Hoss White, Dale Jack, Ryan White; The Father Of Her Children: Louie Morrison; and her grandson in law: Eugene Greene.
She will be remembered by her two daughters and one son: Birdie, Priscilla (Patrick), and Conrad (Sam); her Grandchildren: Eagle (Chelsea), Jared (Chantelle), Casper, Brandon (Gerilyn), Kyle, Montana, Randell, Lynxx, Ivory (Kris), Connie (Isaac), Cami, Rain, Dee-dee (Myron),Anesa, Janessa, Ocean, and Trina; Great-grandchildren: William, Anna, Elliana, Keilan, Khyren, Haelyn, Harlin, Isla, Chloe, Caius, Sundance, Alaina, and Genesis Jane; Her two brothers: Andy (Caroline), and Clarence “Chebooz” White Sr.; Aunt: Shasha (Gordie); Maternal Uncle Eddie Bird; Aunts: Florence Medicine (nee Bird) and Agnes Paul. Her Nieces: Toni, Elaine, Rhonda, Mandy, Goose (Chris), Pammy, Tina, Marge (Jon), Stephanie, Tami (Josh), Allah; Her Nephews: Farrell (Verna), Keith, Randy (Claudine), Wobby (Charlene), A.J. (Crystal), Miinas (Jojo), Gray-fox (Jayd), Sonny (Marilyn), Rene, Jeffrey (Chrysta), Jim, Dino, Kyle, Eugene (Natasha), Clayton (Robin), Timmy, Garret, and Kingsley.
Her favorite words upon departure was always “Kii-zhawenimin Apichi” followed with a big hug.
A traditional wake will occur at Peshigoneb Building in Whitefish Bay, Ontario on Sunday, February 16, 2025 followed by a traditional funeral service on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 10:00am. After the funeral service we will proceed to take “Hasum” to her forever resting place at Kii’eshkitabaning (Agaaming- Lobstick Bay Road) North of Sioux Narrows, Ontario.
