Steve was born in Sudbury in 1958, where from an early age he was drawn to the outdoors. When he wasn’t in the pool competing in the butterfly, Steve could be found slogging through the bush around the French River chasing ducks, deer, or fish with his life-long friend Gordie.
Being in the bush was in Steve’s blood and this relationship with nature continued throughout his life. Steve was especially fond of harvesting and foraging for blueberries, mushrooms, wildlife, herbs, medicines, and teas that could be found in the boreal forest. Strong, durable and committed to getting the job done, there was no better grunt to have with you in the bush than Steve.
On the water, Steve loved to chase flocks of ducks and schools of walleye where he never let a lack of execution get in the way of a good time. Those of us lucky enough to witness his hookset know that it was something to behold, even if he only had a 50% success rate.
Steve loved with all his heart and gave everything to the people around him. This is especially true of his support for his children and grandchildren who could always count on him. In recent years Steve transitioned from “Dad” to “Pappy” and was busy converting his grandchildren in the next generation of nature lovers.
Deep gratitude to Mikey and Penny for their care and kindness during the past three weeks.
Cremation will take place and a service will be held at a later date.
In memory of Steve and in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to A Dog’s Life or better yet adopting a dog.
