James Fredrick Cowden, 97, entered into the loving arms of Jesus during the morning hours of Wednesday (April 15, 2020). Jim was born on December 10, 1922 in Norton, VA to the late George Walker & Ora Faye (Allen) Cowden.
Jim resided in Norton, VA until joining the military. He unselfishly served our country in the United States Navy during WWII where he served in the 77th Navy SeaBee’s. After being discharged, he went to work at Tennessee Eastman Chemical. He met and married Mary Arlene Marshall. They had three children, Cathy, James Jr. (Rick), and Joel. He was a lifelong member of Mafair United Methodist Church. He was also a member of American Legion Hammond Post 3 VFW and Masons.
Jim retried from Eastman Chemical Company after 42 years of dedicated service. He loved his farm and cattle.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Arlene (Marshall) Cowden; son, Joel Cowden; four sisters; and one brother.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cathy Tindall; son, James Jr. (Rick) Cowden; two sisters, Jane Armstrong and Joan Weatherly; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Jim will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 18, 2020 in the Christus Garden at East Lawn Memorial Park with Pastor Adam Love officiating.
