Joe Anna Carter

Joe Anna Quillen Carter, age 94 of Kingsport, entered into the glory of Heaven during the early morning hours on Saturday, September 17, 2016. Joe Anna was born to the late John Johnson and the late Lilian McClellan Johnson on May 17, 1922 in Scott County, VA. In 1942, Joe Anna married Alvon Olene Quillen, Sr. and after 32 years of marriage together, he preceded her in death in 1974. In 1991, Joe Anna married William H. Carter and they shared their lives together for 11 years until his death in 2002.

Joe Anna will be remembered for her loving and caring spirit, and how she could lift a person’s spirit with her gentle smile. She was a woman who was always “on the go” and ready to search out new adventures in her life. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting; but most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Joe Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Alvon Olene Quillen, Sr; her second husband, William H. Carter; her son, Alvon Quillen, Jr.; and son-in-law, Don Byrd. Left to cherish her memory are her four daughters, Carolyn Byrd, Dorothy Boyd and husband Richey, Andra Coates and husband Jerry, and Rhonda Faust; one son, Kevin Quillen and wife Kathy; one daughter-in-law, Janet Quillen; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Amedisys Hospice, located at 116 Jack White Dr., Suite #6, Kingsport, TN 37664.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 19, 2016 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home, Kingsport, TN. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm, immediately following the visitation, with Pastor Tom Edwards officiating. Interment services will be held Monday, September 19, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, VA. Serving as pallbearers will be Donnie Byrd, Harold Byrd, Brooks Derrick, Matt Replogle, Wesley Coates, Josh Collins, Joe Erwin, and Kevin Quillen, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Lane Newsome and Issac Newsome.
