Pauline was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and George Peabody College. She eventually obtained her Master's Degree. She had a passion for teaching and began her career at Church Hill High School, where she taught her favorite subject, American History. After a few years, she moved to Sullivan County and continued teaching for over thirty years, before retiring. Countless students remember her as a caring influence.
A single mother in a time when single moms weren't numerous, Pauline worked tirelessly to support herself and her two daughters. Despite having twice the work and twice the stress, she remained steadfast in her efforts and determination to create and maintain a loving and safe home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.E and Bessie V. Gillaim, as well as beloved brother-in-law Jack L. Duncan and niece, Lisa Summitt.
Surviving are her two daughters, Julie Chitwood (Jeff) and Rachel Jackson, granddaughter Taylor Jackson, former son-in-law, Michael Jackson, niece Rebecca Gotchall(Mark), and several grandnieces and nephew and their families.
Pauline is survived by her identical twin, Christine Duncan, who she cherished every day of her life. The "Gilliam Twins" were a source of joy, and a wee bit of mischief, to all who knew them!
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice.
