He was born March 4 of 1937, to Micki and Leonard Greenwood of Dewey Oklahoma. Most of his childhood occurred in and around Bartlesville Oklahoma, after which he enlisted in the US Navy in 1956. As an honorable dischargee, he found an appropriate calling as a California Highway Patrolman. Following his move to Las Vegas in 1973, he enrolled in the Metropolitan Police Department to serve for twenty-six years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. During this time he met, courted, and finally wed Jody K Bromley on May 10 of 1980. They lived in Las Vegas until 2004, then retired and moved to Yelm Washington. After considerable post-retirement travel, they settled in Celebration Florida for the remainder of his years in 2010.
He was preceded in death by mother and father. His surviving relatives include Jody and Joe Greenwood Jr, as well as three children by previous marriage. Brad Greenwood, Greg Greenwood, and Lorri Eiswald. His siblings Gail Jackson and Raymond Greenwood remain, and he was graced with four grandchildren. Three grandchildren by his daughter and son-in-law Terry; Taner, Aviana, and Lincoln Eiswald. And one grandchild by his son Greg, Codi Graybill. He is also survived by his aunt and uncle through marriage, Bonnie and Dave Shanahan.
Joe will be missed, and leaves an aching vacuum in the lives of those who knew him. He will be remembered, and not only for his love, wit and humor. His accomplishments linger timelessly, since he was a chairman of the Police Manager and Supervisors Association of Las Vegas. He was also a member of the NRA, the Elks, and the Navy Fleet Reserve Association. In later life, he found friendship and fun with the automobile club known as the Florida Crossfire Group.
The people he met will remember his love of laughter, and the irreverent stories that he often told. So many people heard tales of conflict and joy, morality and life, from this wonderful man. He spun them from his heart, and put a little bit of his spirit into every telling, so that they grew and took on a life of their own in the hearts and minds of the listeners. And while departed, he will nevertheless live on.
His cremated remains will be interred privately. An open memorial to him will be held at 12:30 PM inside Celebration Community Church on November 10. It is located at 501 Celebration Place in the town of the same name. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association.
Grissom Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with Joe's final arrangements.
