

Schmidt, Anna Gertrude, age 91 of Seymour, born February 2, 1920, in Pittsburgh (Sharpsburg), PA died on October 16, 2011. She was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Etna, PA, for many years. Predeceasing her were parents, Andrew and Irene Mae, brothers and their wives, William and Roberta, and Andrew and Eleanor, and Anna’s pet companion Willie. Anna leaves to mourn for her, special friends, June Hesson and family, many neighbors in Seymour, her wonderful Caregivers at Mountain Brooke Assisted Living Village, in Sevierville, TN and the special Caregivers at Caris.
Ms Schmidt graduated from St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA in 1941, as an instructor in Anatomy and Head Nurse of their Psychiatric Unit. With the advent of World War II, she joined the army Nurse Corp in 1943 and served in the China-Burma-India Theater and in the Persian Gulf Command. She received an honorable discharge in May 1946 and continued her service in the Veterans Administration in Coatesville, PA. She took classes at Villanova College and the University of Pennsylvania. She received a BS Degree in Nursing Education and graduated with high honors from the University of Pittsburgh and earned a MS Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.
Her career continued with the Veteran’s Administration, serving as an instructor and as Associate Chief in Nursing Education in Coatesville, PA. She also served in that position in Chillicothe, OH and Lyons, NJ, until her retirement in 1974. She was also an active member of the American Nurses Association and the National League of Nursing and other organizations.
After retirement Anna joined her retired friend, Barbara Landauer (deceased), and together, traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Alaska, Mexico, and the Orient. In 1978, they settled in Seymour, TN, where they became active supporters of the Lady Vols and the Boost Her Club, serving on the Advisory Committee for several years. In 1992, they were selected for the Boost Her Hall of Fame. The Landauer/Schmidt Endowment Fund supports two scholarships in Basketball, one in Golf, and one in Softball. Her other interests were in the McClung Museum, Ijams, the Humane Society, Talking books for the Sevierville Library, and a Scholarship for Seymour High School.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Friday-October 21st at Berry Funeral Home-Chapman Hwy. Funeral service will follow at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday-October 22nd in Woodlawn Cemetery, Knoxville, TN with military honors.
