Dr. Brant Gregory Kersey, age 51, of Knoxville, Tennessee, took his own life on Thursday, July 25, 2019 after struggling with a traumatic brain injury for over a year. Despite his struggles, he felt genuinely blessed to have spent time with his family and friends during the year after his injury. Brant was a beloved family physician who loved family dinners, movie nights, science fiction, and Major League Baseball. After graduating from Brookstone High School in Columbus, Georgia, Brant attended Duke University on an ROTC scholarship, where he made many lasting friendships through Sigma Nu fraternity. He became a Satellite Operations officer with the Air Force after college, then attended Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where he met his wife, Leanne. He is preceded in death by his mother, Juliet Regina Towson, as well as his grandparents, Millie and Bob Dolan and Robert and Alice Towson. Brant is survived by his wife, Leanne McGinnis Kersey; his children, Will, Emily, and Parker Kersey; his father and step-mother, Joe and Cherry Kersey; and his sister and brother-in-law, Meredith and Kevin Horn; and their children, Sophie and Cooper. Family will receive friends Saturday, August 17, 2019 in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville, Tennessee from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm with Celebration of Life to follow at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Knoxville Area Brain Injury Support Group at the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center. Online condolences may be made at www.berryfuneralhome.com.

I was a patient of Dr Kersey for many years. I was so saddened by the news of the accident. He was one of the finest most compassionate doctors I have ever known. Always, spending extra time to talk, to comfort and reassure. I missed being able to see him and valued his intelligence and always felt like I was in good hand with him as a patient. My deepest sympathy to his wife and children. He was a very special doctor and person. May all of you find the comfort and love and compassion to get through this.

I had no idea about Brant's passing until today. He lived across the street from me in Columbus through middle school and high school. Bright guy. Athletic. My thoughts are with him and his family.

Brant was “my” doc twice over. While stationed (I was active duty Navy at the time) in Knoxville he was my assigned physician. When I retired, he took me back as a patient. Going to see him was always pleasant, even though it usually meant I was ill. He would prescribe me the appropriate medication and then add a script to “play video games” for a day. I will miss him as a fellow veteran, my doc and a warm genuine person.
Farewell Shipmate.
Sincerely,
Breckenridge

I had no idea. No idea about many things. You'll always be a fond part of my memories and have a special place in my heart.

Brant and I were friends in high school and I spent many a night at his house watching movies (they were the only family I knew that had a VideoDisc player!) and playing video games. We were such nerds. It was awesome. We both had VW Sciroccos and for a few summers we were the Scirocco Brothers. And we both served in the Air Force, so we were brothers in arms.

Farewell, brother.

Brant: a loyal, wonderfully gifted soul, who, to top if off, was undeniably handsome.

Brant shared so much with his family and his universe before departing. I know The Kerseys will all carry so much of him with them always. No doubt he is watching over you all now and eternally.

I weep for your loss and send love and strength.

Until you meet again, I know he is with you.

Brant you were so much more than my doctor for the past 11 years.
You solved my mysterious illness that countless doctors before you, neither had the intellect, time or passion to resolve.
Time with your patients was critical to you. You only endeavored to achieve a positive impact on their lives and WOW did you succeed.
We became personal friends beyond the doctor patient relationship.
I am forever indebted to you and will mourn your passing.
To Leanne and kids please accept my deepest sympathies.
